Aztlán Culture and Identity, Tensions, and Realities

I sensed that the classroom energy had subsided, and when I looked around, there were fewer students in the room. The young Mexicanas had finished their lunch, and they took turns throwing their empty bags into the garbage can placed in the center of our circle. La de Sinaloa pulled out a bag of cookies from her back pack, and she proudly announced that the cookies were from Mexico, like the kind she used to eat when living in Sinaloa. She grabbed a few and smiled when she gave me the bag. All eyes were on me as I ate one cookie, wanted another, but passed the bag around the circle because I saw eagerness to have a taste of Mexico. Before I could introduce the next encuentro question, La de Michoacán looked at the cookie in her hand and said: “I like these kind of cookies because they are different from the kind my mother and I buy in the grocery store. Sometimes we have galletas y dulces, cookies and candy, de México, but not enough.” I made a quick note in my field notes to remember that observation because I saw their connection to the absence and presence of the homeland; no matter where they live or where they find themselves they will always be culturally connected. My field note elaborations also included this analysis:

As I listened to the young Mexicanas, I looked at each one, with a bit more attention to La de Michoacán. As they sat in a peripheral place, a U.S. classroom, they recuperated the flavors and sweetness of México by transcending the borderlines with longing and memory of their homeland and forgetting for the moment their displacement in the U.S.
